If you have a canon compact digital camera and no money to buy a real DSLR camera just like me, don't worry JUST HACK IT! CHDK is a firmware enhancement that operates on a number of Canon Cameras. CHDK gets loaded into your camera's memory upon bootup. It provides additional functionality beyond that currently provided by the native camera firmware.You can take a look at CHDK.com

The most amazing thing that CHDK does is that you can shot in RAW format so you can do anything on your images without losing any information. The reason that i hacked my Canon Powershot A550 is that i wanted to generate some HDR images just to familiarize with the process. A disadvantage of this software is that the RAW pictures can not be imported into Photoshop directly they need conversion. Here are some of my experiments:
